E. Competition In the Tagaytay City we have several competitors in the terms of Shawarma product and there are also a lot of food charts that place in the different area of Tagaytay City because it is the tourist spot in the Philippines. The main targets of this food chart are the lower middle to upper middle class and some are tourist international and local. Our indirect competitors are Mr. Mappy pizza, Potato Chips, Siomai, Angel’s Burger and etc. Our direct competitors in the area Turks (Olivarez) and Alibaba Shawarma (magallenes branch and robinson tagaytay). Market Shares:Turk’s Shawarma (Olivarez Plaza) is the number one in market shares because of its place and the volume of people go in Olivarez Plaza while Alibaba Shawarma (Robinson Tagaytay Branch) is the number two on the spot because of its place but theres a lot of competitors in the place like restaurant and fast food chains and Alibaba Shawarma (magallenes square Branch) it is the last spots because in t he that place only workers of different establishment are the customer because that place have different restaurant and food chains to choose from like Leslies, Max restaurant, Yellow Cab and many more.Resources: Since, this establishment is food stall type and there is a Franchisee and Franchisor. The resources of the business are comes from the Franchisor all the thing that will be needed in the business comes from franchisor. Product and Market Focus The product is shawarma product it is meat preparation, where  lamb,  chicken,  turkey,  beef,  veal, or mixed meats are placed on a  spit  (commonly a vertical spit in  restaurants), and may be grilled for as long as a day. Shavings are cut off the block of meat for serving, and the remainder of the block of meat is kept heated on the rotating spit. There market focuses to sell the product on their target market they only focus on selling the product they not create new idea about the product. Goals They goal is to se ll a delicious shawarma to their customer and serve the best shawarma on the place. Strategies This food stall only focuses in selling the product to their customer they not focus on how their establishment continues to operate. Their also dependent on their franchisor all planning and strategies comes from their franchisor. Strengths and WeaknessesAll establishments has a nice place but the product they offer is only limited in terms of sizes and different variety of flavor. Key Barriers to Entry There no vacant place to rent There are so many stalls in the place There are no yet crews for the business There is no yet a stall for the business Our product is unique from the other shawarma product because our product is a kind of street food that is of the same concept as Shawarma which is thinly sliced meat mixed with chopped vegetables and is rolled into a large piece of steamed bread. The difference from our product and the traditional shawarma is that we modified the fillings. We will not fill the bread with the usual meat and vegetables. Instead, we will add new flavors to the traditional shawarma. Examples are Spaghetti, Pizza and California maki flavored shawarma. We will address our product as shawarma because the idea of filipino consumers of shawarma is filled flatbread which is applied in our new product. This new product will be named â€Å"Shawarmalaya†. Shawarmalaya came from the words â€Å"Shawarma† and â€Å"Malaya. Shawarma because the concept of this food is derived from the traditional shawarma and Malaya because customers can freely choose from the new flavors of shawarma. The idea of this product is mostly derived from the traditional shawarma so the preparation of this product will be quite the same. The facilities to be used will also be the same except for the vertical grill used in cooking the traditional shawarma meat. We will also be needing an oven and steamers for the baking and steaming of the bread. Usual kitchen ute nsils will also be used for cooking and preparing the fillings. The processes and technology to be used in the preparation of this product will not be as high-tech as used in making the traditional shawarma.Since we are short on facility and capital, we have decided to use alternatives to make the product. The use of old processes of making food will also mean less cost and expenses which will be good for the group/company. The usual shawarma meat is cooked in a vertical grill, in our case; we will just grill meat in an old fashioned way which will make the meat tastier and cost less. On the other hand, the preparation of the bread will be the same as the traditional shawarma which is baked and steamed then rolled with the fillings. This idea is innovative in a way. We managed to add a twist and modify an already existing product. We didn’t change the form of the product but its approach. We are trying to make a new perception of shawarma on the minds of the consumers. We also want the consumers to enjoy the food they like in a new more flavorful way. Our product is difficult to copy because we have secret ingredient to put up to the product and we have the best suppliers that will supply best ingredients that will be needed. Our competitors will be surprise because we have different approach to our customer because they have the free will to choose what the flavor will be put to their shawarmalaya. Our competitors will be surprise because we have different variety to choose from we have different flavors that is new to the eyes and taste of the consumer. When we launch our product we will do first 100 customers is free to taste our product and first one week of our product is by one take one. In takes a lot of time to copy our product because it is unique and it has different ingredients to find.

The global warming

Global Heating: A Man-made ProblemMany old ages in the yesteryear there was contention over whether planetary heating was genuinely happening. Over this period many different scientists have done many trials and experiments which have proven that planetary heating is a fact non a theory. Now that planetary heating has been proven true, there is a argument over whether it is caused by natural happenings or semisynthetic patterns. In the docudrama, Inconvenient Truth wrote by former Vice president Al Gore, it explains and provides grounds that planetary heating is a semisynthetic job. Harmonizing to Fred Singer ‘s and Dennis Avery ‘s book, Unstoppable Global Warming, planetary heating and chilling seem to be portion of a 1,500-year rhythm of moderate temperature swings and human activities are non the primary cause of planetary heating. Although some think that Global heating is merely a portion of the Earth ‘s natural rhythm, I agree with Al Gore, that planetary heat ing is caused by worlds ‘ actions for several grounds: 1 ) We use many of the Earth ‘s resources really heedlessly and inefficiently. 2 ) Our abuse of fossil fuels emits dozenss of C dioxide in the air doing dire alterations around the universe. 3 ) The increasing population of the universe makes the earth work harder than it should to keep all of the people in it. One indispensable ground why I think planetary heating is a semisynthetic job is because people use the Earth ‘s natural resources prodigally. For illustration, when we burn and cut down woods for paper, wood or to do room for people to populate, we are lending to planetary heating. Harmonizing to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, trees absorb C dioxide from the air, which is one of the nursery gases that are absorbed by the ambiance. By taking the trees away the C dioxide that could hold been absorbed by the trees will merely travel into the ambiance ( USEPA ) . When C dioxide or other nursery gases get absorbed by the ambiance they trap heat in the lower ambiance that goes back down to the Earth. When there is big sum of the nursery gases in the ambiance it can do excess warming of the Earth ( Inconvenient ) . Another natural resource that we take advantage of is our dirt. When we have our refuse taken to elephantine landfills we are making more injury to our planet than we know. Harmonizing to Brian Ladd, a member of Eco-Cycle ‘s Community Action Team, when waste under the land starts disintegrating it do methane gas to ooze to the surface and enters the lower ambiance. Methane is a powerful nursery gas that is twenty one times more effectual at pin downing radiant heat than C dioxide ( Ladd ) . We need to take a good expression at how efficaciously we are utilizing natural resources because we are utilizing them faster than nature can bring forth them. Beside the natural resources above, there is one resource that we use wholly irresponsibly. That resource is fossil fuels, which are the primary subscribers to planetary heating. Fossil fuels are made of organic affair such as coal or oil. We burn fossil fuels everyday when we drive our autos, and create electricity in our places. When you burn fossil fuels it releases C dioxide. Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, in 650,000 old ages the C dioxide degree had ne'er gone supra 300 parts per million. Harmonizing to Anne Waple, the Communications Manager at the Climate Change Science Program Office, Today, degrees are greater than 380 ppm and increasing at a rate of 1.9 ppm yr-1 since 2000 ( Waple ) . The IPCC Special Report on Emission Scenario stated that by the terminal of the twenty-first century, we could anticipate to see CO2 degrees between 490 to 1260 ppm ( Waple ) . These high degrees of C dioxide cause the thaw of glaciers around the universe. For illustration, the Himalaya â⠂¬Ëœs Glaciers provide imbibing H2O for 40 per centum of the people on Earth ( Inconvenient ) . If the glaciers keep runing at such a rapid rate there will be a deficit of H2O. Since more glaciers everyplace are runing off it will do the sea degrees to lift. ( Inconvenient ) Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, if Greenland melted topographic points such Florida, San Francisco Bay, and Manhattan would be submerged. The authorities needs to take planetary warming more earnestly because if this happened it would be to lay waste toing. Though burning fossil fuels is the primary cause of planetary heating, population would merely do the effects of planetary heating greater. Do n't you believe if we have excessively many people on Earth we will make excessively much pollution for the Earth to manage? This is why population has become a factor in planetary heating. For blink of an eyes, more people means extra usage of transit, which causes the combustion of more fossil fuels. Larger populations besides mean a larger demand for H2O. There will besides be a bigger demand for nutrient ( Inconvenient ) . Most people in the universe are meat feeders which means we have to engender more cattles. Harmonizing to the Children ‘s British Broadcasting Company, cattles are a beginning of nutrient, and their flatuss and manure contains methane. â€Å"Just one cow gives off adequate harmful methane gas in a individual twenty-four hours to make full around 400 litre bottles, which is truly bad for the environment† ( CB BC ) . To keep all the people in the universe we have to go on doing room for people to populate. One manner we do this is by cutting and firing down woods. Thirty per centum of the C dioxide that goes up into the ambiance comes from forest combustion ( Waple ) . If we keep interfering with nature ‘s rhythms at that place might non be any rhythms to mess up after a piece. Even with all the grounds above Fred Singer and Dennis Avery believe that we have nil to make with the cause of planetary heating. They think that, â€Å"human-emitted CO2 ( C dioxide ) has played merely a minor function in it. Alternatively, the mild warming seems to be portion of a natural 1,500-year clime rhythm ( plus or minus 500 old ages ) that goes back at least one million years† ( Singer and Avery pg. 3 ) . In their book, they stated that ice nucleuss from Greenland and Antarctic ‘s Vostok Glacier showed the same 1,500-year rhythms ( Singer and Avery ) . Harmonizing to Inconvenient Truth, it is true that there was a mediaeval heating period and two others. If you were to compare the mediaeval heating period CO2 degrees with those of the other two, you would see that they fit closely together ( Inconvenient ) . If you were to compare today ‘s C dioxide degrees to the predating warming period ‘s degrees, you would see that our degrees are off the chart s ( Inconvenient ) . So what happened between so and now? It is obvious that we have done something to do the CO2 degrees so much higher than the old heating periods. Harmonizing to Emily Robinson, a imperativeness secretary at Union of Concerned Scientists, another thing that you should take in consideration is that Fred Singer is â€Å"affiliated† with no less than 11 â€Å"think tanks† and â€Å"associations† that have received support from ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil is the universe ‘s largest publically traded international oil and gas company. Singer ‘s ain â€Å"Science and Environmental Policy Project† ( SEPP ) has received $ 20,000 from ExxonMobil ( Robinson ) . Dennis Avery is a â€Å"Senior Fellow† for a â€Å"think tank† called the Hudson Institute. The Hudson Institute received $ 25,000 from ExxonMobil ( Robinson ) . It sounds to me like they are covering for ExxonMobil. Do you believe they are seeking to protect ExxonMob il to maintain the money coming in? Nice defense. More people need to look at all the grounds that proves we have contributed to the cause of planetary heating. We need to acknowledge that we are doing planetary heating by utilizing the Earth ‘s natural resources recklessly, breathing immense sums of carbon dioxide into the ambiance by firing fossil fuels, and seting force per unit area on the Earth and it resources by over populating. Although there has been other warming periods before our clip, today ‘s CO2 degrees are beyond comparing with old warming periods. The authorities should halt debating over what caused it and set some Torahs into consequence. There would be no injury in puting Torahs to assist the Earth. All it could make is assist the United States become a better topographic point to populate.Work CitedInconvenient Truth. Prod. Laurie David, et Al. Dir. Davis Guggenheim. Perf. Al Gore. Pandora Marketing Strategy Essay

Pandora has often been heralded for it’s great success in word of mouth and viral marketing. By 2012 Pandora had accumulated 100 million+ active and registered users, most of which had been acquired organically. According to an interview with Matt Nichols, Pandora’s Director of Marketing, Pandora success comes from providing a personalized service that it’s ‘competitors’ simply don’t match up to. â€Å"You can create personalized radio stations that play only music you’ll love†¦ help you discover music you’ll enjoy and only play you songs that you want to hear (http://geekcast.fm/archives/semcast-5-search-engine-marketing-at-pandora-with-matt-nichols/). It is this model of personalized radio to for todays listeners who like their music how, when, and where they want it and all of that for free, that has allowed Pandora to remain the largest player in online radio. Search In 2005 Pandora began a highly successful paid search campaign that ran for a little over three years. Through search optimization and paid advertising through popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo! Pandora was able to draw in a larger listening base. Unfortunately the campaign was shut down after a few years because the cost of advertising had begun to lower the margin for revenue, whose unit of monetization is based on cents per listening hours. Email Success in Pandora’s email strategy has been found by limiting emails sent to users on the basis of information relevant to their personal account, such as adding artists to a particular station. According the Nichols â€Å"It’s really about delivering information that is relevant, rather then killing the user with over emailing.† (http://amatv.marketingpower.com/pandoras-word-of-mouth-marketing) Integration Pandora reaches listeners who use desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets) through its website and mobile apps respectively. Additionally, the company has partnered with several car  manufacturers such as Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, among others to integrate its online radio service with automotive sound systems. Such strategic alliances do not generate any sort of revenue for Pandora but increase its exposure and utilization. oPandora’s advertising sales force in 2012 was 75% larger than a year earlier with five teams that focus on different platforms. The purpose of such increase has been to grow ads revenue faster than listener hours in order to offset the high royalty costs that those hours imply.

Problem Solving Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Problem Solving - Assignment Example As if to compound the matters, I started getting very simple tasks, which befit only the beginners and not people with fair bit of experience like me. As a matter of fact, my co-workers started to consider this as a form of unofficial demotion in my position, and all this was highly painful for me, to say the least. Here, I need to add that, my boss is a kind of person who seldom does directly highlight any errors or shortcomings of the employees. On the contrary, he expects them to be wise enough to identify the flaws, by themselves. And all the circumstances strongly suggested that, it was now my turn to run the extra mile in tracing both the error, and also the reason leading to it. At that juncture, it was of paramount relevance for me to be able to specifically pinpoint the exact issue that brought about these unpleasant circumstances. I began an intense mental exercise and consequently, I got aware of the exact date from which my boss’s approach towards me started to be indifferent. Immediately, I began a very careful and meticulous study of the two documents having the tasks completed by me, one pertaining to the above date and the other one to the previous day. A careful study ensured that there were no errors in the first document. But a similar mode of study of the second one made me realize that there was indeed a major error, the likes of which do not befit a professional of my experience. It was a rather major flaw, and in fact, I was surprised that my name is still not removed from the company’s rolls! Then, it became my bound obligation to undo the damage caused by me, and that too as swiftly as possible, so that I could regain the pri or image of a committed worker. And it was here that I decided to adopt the strategy of means – end analysis in minimizing the damage. â€Å"The means – end analysis is a pattern of tackling various problems, by

Issues that affect human rights of a group of Indigenous people Essay

Issues that affect human rights of a group of Indigenous people - Essay Example The position, land and demographics of any particular state decide the spectrum of rights for the people of that particular region (Council of Europe, 2011). From past studies, it can be said that human rights are those associated with people living in a cross-cultural or multi-cultural spectrum. A cross cultural spectrum is the one which could comprise people of different identities like indigenous people. Category of indigenous people is one major category within a multi-cultural system, in which human rights fall at the highest human distinction (An-Na'im, 1995). Talking about Australia, a country of 22 million human population holds a diversified multi cultural system. People who belong to different cultures, casts or identities reside in such cross-cultural country. There are partially several indigenous groups that dwell in different districts of the country. Human rights of indigenous people in Australia are always under the question. This is because of avoidance and negligenc e given by the government officials in the indigenous section. Concerning Australia, there are mainly two indigenous communities (aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) which are always on the discussion (Kinley, 1998). This is because of their consistent proclaims that government ignores their fundamental native rights in the region (Eniar, 1999). From historical evidences, it can be said that indigenous Australians are truly identical to the continent, as they fall in the geography since 40,000 years ago. Due to a couple of reasons the native Australians often fall behind the human rights appearance, as majority claims them to be a minority within the region. There are couples of issues that relate to native Australians, which would be part of the discussion of this study. Here is a brief introduction of two major communities who became the victims of human right violence in the country: Aboriginals Aboriginal is a name used for native Australians. The word became popular for indi genous Australians who migrated from Southern routes of India to nearby islands of the country. Aboriginals migrated to Australia 50,000 years ago, a time when their forefathers adjusted them to different regions of the continent. For such reason, aboriginals are truly to be called Australians holding original identification and by birth distinction of the place. Their presence can also be found on parallel geographies of the country like in Tasmania or in other adjacent islands (Aboriginal affairs, 2003). Aboriginals face a lot of problems in the continent in which the major problems are about the deprivation of land, social injustice, minority treatment or cultural discrimination. Since the last couple of decades their problems have been increased instead of decreasing which is because of big racist presence within the country region (Aboriginal affairs, 2003). Torres Strait Islanders Torres Strait Islander is another big indigenous community which resides in the northern side of the state of Queensland. Natively they belong to Torres Strait Islands which are places of their ancestors’ origination. It was 40,000 years ago when Torres Strait Indigenous arrived at the continent. It was their expected best place of reside, holding a natural identify of their forefathers’ attribution (Heritage Division, 2010). Torres Strait Islanders are natively true Australians, which according to racist’s communities is not a sufficient factor that can give them their

Theory Of Knowledge Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Theory Of Knowledge - Essay Example As a result of the large migrations, which have taken place since the ending of the colonial period, there are now large numbers of Moslems, as well as Hindus, Sikhs and adherents of other Eastern religions in Western Europe. In the United States there are huge numbers of ‘Hispanics’ from Central and South America. There are large numbers of adherents to a wide variety of ‘New Age’ religions. In Europe an increasing proportion of the population affirm that they belong to no religion and secular humanism is widely practiced. In other words, there is a plurality of religious beliefs and practices, all of which make claims to some sort of legitimacy. Religious pluralism is a social fact in our current social context. Secondly, personal and social morality is much less likely to be dictated by some religious or other authority figure or by tradition or social custom than it used to be. With increasing levels of education more and more people are making up their own minds on more and more issues and moral dilemmas than used to be the case. At the Second Vatican Council even the Catholic Church finally affirmed the primacy of the individual conscience, even though it insisted that such a conscience ought to be ‘informed’ by an awareness of official Church teaching.... eme of Pope John Paul II's encyclical letter Veritatis Splendor in which the pope warned against 'today's widespread tendencies towards subjectivism, utilitarianism and relativism . . . (which claim) full cultural and social legitimacy'.25 The prevalent view would deny that there is any way in which one person's view of what is 'natural' can be verified above that of anybody else's conflicting view. For believers, the Ten Commandments provide important guidelines though even here there are exceptions: the poor have the right to take and eat someone else's food if they are starving, and the State has the right to kill in legitimate defense. Part of a common contemporary perception is that religion is not always benign. Religious conflicts have been pervasive throughout history. In our own times we have experienced the vicious 'troubles' between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland; between Catholic Croats, Orthodox Serbs and Moslems in Bosnia; Moslems and Hindus in Kashmir; and Moslems and Jews in Israel. Secular humanists see these conflicts as clear evidence of the evil consequences of strongly held religious beliefs. Nor can it be claimed that all forms of Christianity are benign. People in the justice and peace movement would certainly want to distance themselves quite firmly from extremist forms of fundamentalism, for example those articulated by some elements of the 'new Christian right' in the Southern States of the USA and possibly fundamentalist House Churches in Britain. All of these factors, suspicions concerning the 'fruits' of religion, the fact of a plurality of at least partially conflicting faiths, no universally accepted authority on moral issues, the emphasis on experientialism, subjectivism and relativism, a pragmatic utilitarianism, and a

Field Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Field Report - Essay Example It can be apparently observed with the occurrence of physical changes amid the individuals affected with late adulthood. Usually, people with late adulthood will possess advance ageing and might lead to a retirement stage (Potter & Perry 191-211, 2009). The association amid the biological, psychological and the cultural factors aid in the identification of late adulthood (Pearson Education, 2013). In this article, a filed survey has been conducted in a community wherein older adults have been residing. The main purpose of this field experience is to find out the thoughts and the feelings of this specific group of people i.e. the late adulthood. Description of the Experience The field experience or the survey in terms of interacting with older adults in a community setting aims at finding out the development of late adulthood in that particular community and the way they lead their life. Moreover, the experience tends to verify whether the people with late adulthood were leading a bet ter life and attend various recreational activities or not. The targeted group of people in the field trip was 68 residents and the retirement home is 26 years. They were offered with two sorts of special care namely independent care and assisted living. The term ‘assisted living’ denotes the housing facility which is provided to the people having disability. In relation to the special features, the residents of the home were taken for shopping a month and provided church service twice a week. Other facilities such as beauty salon and haircut were also offered. Exploration of the Experience, Thoughts and Feelings Nursing is such a profession wherein a person must be treated as a human being rather than a patient. At an old age, a person is in utmost need of care, love and affection. The prime duty of the nursing professionals is to deliver proper care with affection especially to the older adults. After visiting the community of the older people, it was observed that th ose living in the retirement home were not only provided with the basic needs, but also with other necessary requirements and recreational activities. The activities such as band performances have been arranged for them so that the older people can lead a better life at the end of their life (BVT Publishing, 2001). An effective care was being provided as they were taken for shopping and visiting church regularly. Hence, from the field experience, it can be concluded that the old people residing in that community were provided with better physical along with mental care. Analysis of Learning The above field experience can be related with the learning of effective nursing programs linked with the perceptions of health, growth and development of late adulthood. From the experience, it can be affirmed that the people with late adulthood were at the end of their life and thus require to be enjoyed with their family and friends along with proper health care. Specially mentioning, delivera nce of an effectual nursing care is quite indispensable in their life along with the support of family and friends. Numerous physical and health related changes occur during this period that needs to be treated quite effectively by the trained health professionals. As a learner in the nursing program, one can be clear about the ways of taking the best care of the people residing i

Inventory management ratio analysis of Ford and GM Essay

Inventory management ratio analysis of Ford and GM - Essay Example The inventory turnover ratio determines the management’s efficiency in converting the available inventory into sales. A low inventory turnover is a bad sign to a company’s performance since it indicates that the company’s products risk deteriorating. The company’s product will diminish in value due to overstaying in the stores. Due to this phenomenon, companies dealing with perishable goods usually have very high inventory turnover (Bull, 78). The average days to sell inventory is a financial measure that gives the willing investors an idea of the duration it takes for converting the available inventory into revenue. Therefore, a company’s performance ratio determines management efficiency in converting the stock into sales. In most scenarios a low average days to sell ratio is desirable. This ratio varies between industries. The average days to sell ratio is calculated as the total cost of inventory divided by cost of sales and the result got from the computation multiplied by 365 days. An average day to sell ratio forms one part of the cash conversion cycle. It represents the conversion raw material into cash. The day’s sales outstanding and the day’s payable outstanding are the other two stages in the cash conversion cycle. By determining how long a company holds on inventory before selling measures the company’s efficiency ratio. The ratio gives the average time it takes for a company’s cash to be tied up. The inventory turnover ratio of Ford is 15.9 times while that of GM is 10.0 times.

Macro Economics Wall Street Journal Article Essay

Macro Economics Wall Street Journal Article - Essay Example It could not however be fully associated with higher future income or enrollment in schools (Da Costa ‘Wall Street Journal’). The lives and welfare of these disadvantaged groups in America were however changed for the better. The macroeconomic value of the ‘Summer Jobs Program for the Poor Youth’ is closely linked to the economic theories of Business Cycles and Unemployment. Investing in the summer jobs programs for the disadvantaged youths led to changes in the cycles of business and unemployment in America. Unemployment, which is a major factor affecting the young population in America is significantly reduced as more youths get opportunities for employment. Increased income and savings will see more young people venture into individual business investments. Resultantly, more cycles of business will arise. The underlying assumption is that by being part of the active production, these disadvantaged youths lower their risks of imprisonment and death. Lowered cases of imprisonment and mortality imply an increased labor force provided by the prime-aged population and hence higher productivity. The economy’s business cycles and unemployment trends will, therefore, be

The Importance of Being Earnest, Marriage and Respectability Download this essay Print Save Essay Example for Free

The Importance of Being Earnest, Marriage and Respectability Download this essay Print Save Essay In the Victorian times respectability was very important and you were only really respected if you were in the Upper Class. An example of this is in Act 1 when Lady Bracknell is questioning Jack Worthing about his life, upbringing and income. She starts off by telling Jack that she has the same list as the dear Duchess of Bolton, so she is instantly trying to make Jack respect her and almost worry that he isnt good enough for Gwendolen and therefore her questions might be personal and therefore he might just want to go and not waste her time. The way she talks by talking about her own personal opinion about the question she is about to ask before she has asked it, so its almost pressurising Jack into saying a similar answer to stay on her good side. But the way she talks shows how she thinks she more important than Jack and she is trying to find faults. When she starts asking about his housing she asks where and what number Jack lives at and when he replies 149 she shakes her head, saying The unfashionable side. I thought there was something. This shows that she has been trying to find faults, maybe because she does not think he born in to a high enough class to be allowed to marry Gwendolen. When she does find a major fault she sounds disgusted as her sentences have become just a word or two long. Found, A handbag?. As Jack has some faults Lady Bracknell basically says no, you cant marry Gwendolen because she doesnt think that he has enough respect to become her son-in-law as he might end up with people not having as much respect for Lady Bracknell. Although when Lady Bracknell finds out about Cecily Cardew, his ward, she instantly has respect for her, because while she was questioning Jack about her she asked whether Miss Cardew has any little fortune but when she finds out that Cecily has about a hundred and thirty thousand pounds in the Funds, Lady Bracknell sounds shocked that a young girl is to be in possession of that amount of money, she then almost turns back on all she had previously said by going Miss Cardew seems to me a most attractive young lady, now that I look at her. Although near the end of the play you discover that before Lady Bracknell married Lord Bracknell she had no fortune of any kind, when you read this you discover that Lady Bracknell would have had no respect and throughout the play she has been hypocritical towards the other characters. This also shows Lady Bracknells views on marriage as she is very reluctant to let Gwendolen marry Jack, as she doesnt think he is respected enough nor has enough money to be part of her family. So basically Lady Bracknells views on marriage are that the parents must choose the husband of their daughter, and make sure that he is respectable, has a good fortune, well known family background and many homes in expensive areas. Although it turns out that Lady Bracknell would have previously hoped that the families she hoped to marry into wouldnt mind the fact that she was poor and had no respect. It also shows that since she has married Lord Bracknell she has been influenced to think the opposite to what she would have done previously. Algernons views on marriage arent very good at the beginning of the play as he thinks that a man that marries without knowing Bunbury has a very tedious time of it, and that in married life three is company and two is none. So basically Algernons imaginary invalid friend Bunbury has been made up so if he ever does marry he can escape his wife and family and see other women as he would tell his wife that Bunbury is under the weather, therefore the three is company and two is none is just simply saying that you can get easily bored with having just woman in his life, but having two is different and you can alternate between two women. Also at the beginning of the play Algernon asks his servant Lane why it is that at a bachelors establishment the servants invariably drink the champagne, Lane replies by saying that the quality is better in a bachelors house than in married households as in married households, there are other things the man has to spend his money on like wife and children , so the quality of champagne isnt as expensive or of a first-rate brand. After that Algernon thinks that married life is an unpleasant experience as he has to spend more money, and the champagne isnt as high quality. Later on in the play, towards the end Algernon stands up to his Aunt Augusta (Lady Bracknell) by saying that he doesnt care a twopence about social possibilities, so Algernon is saying that he doesnt mind if he looses respect by marrying Cecily because he loves her. He has also killed off Bunbury by this point, I think maybe because he has never been in love properly before, and he always thought that marriage was a bad thing, but his family would expect him to get married, therefore he created Bunbury so he could still leave a bachelor style life on the side. But by killing Bunbury its made you feel that Algernon is serious about marriage and wants to be with one woman, Cecily. I also feel that near the end of the play when it is discovered that Jack is really Algernons older brother, he has become a bit jokey with Jack as he calls him old boy, but I think that Algernon feels that he is in a higher class than Jack still, even though they are brothers as he then calls him my dear boy, so Algernon isnt treating Jack with much respect there. I feel that Algernon likes to be respected, but doesnt like to respect other people. Gwendolen is mainly respected because she is part of the Bracknell family, who seem to be rich with a large house, and her mother wants the best for her. She is also old fashioned when it comes to a marriage proposal, as Jack says we must get married at once and although Gwendolen has practically said yes she insists that Jack proposes properly by getting down on one knee and asking Gwendolen, will you marry me? Of course Gwendolen says yes. We learn that when Gwendolen was a little girl she had dreams of marrying someone called Ernest, and thinks that the only safe name is Ernest. She also mentions that the first time she heard that Algernon, her cousin, had a friend named Ernest, she knew she was destined to love him. Although Gwendolen isnt the most intelligent woman as she really doesnt care about money, appearance or lifestyle, as long as the man she is with is called Ernest. Cecily is very similar to Gwendolen as she also had a childhood dream of marrying a man named Ernest. She also doesnt care about how much money or power the man has as long as Ernest is his name. When she found out that Jack had a brother named Ernest she was excited and interested about meeting him, and had already decided that they were engaged. Cecily has also planned out what Ernest (Algernon) has given her, this is the little bangle with the true lovers knot I promised you always to wear, this is the box in which I keep all your dear letters. Cecily have sent herself gifts and letters pretending that she herself is Ernest and has kept them all, when Ernest sees all these treasures he seems quite shocked but doesnt want to hurt Cecily, because his main intention is to marry her.

Texas Retirement System (TRS) Essay Example for Free

Texas Retirement System (TRS) Essay You have been recruited to consult for the Texas Retirement System (TRS). TRS is looking at alternative investment opportunities. They see John Bogle’s (founder of Vanguard) mantra of simply investing in index funds as particularly compelling. Yet, Miller’s historical record at Value Trust has been outstanding, and several trustees are in favor of investing with him. Your task to provide a recommendation to the trustees as to whether or not they should invest with Miller and Value Trust. Again, the case questions are here to simply guide your analysis. You are preparing a professional report for the TRS trustees, and it should be structured accordingly. Also, don’t spend a lot of time repeating the facts of the case itself, but certainly use the exhibits to support your assessments. 1. How well has Value Trust performed in recent years? In making that assessment, what benchmark(s) are you using? How do you measure investment performance? What does good performance mean to you? 2. What might explain the fund’s performance? To what extent do you believe an investment strategy, such as Miller’s, explains performance? 3. How easy will it be to sustain Miller’s historical performance record into the future? What factors support your conclusion? 4. Consider the mutual fund industry. What roles do portfolio managers play? What are the differences between fundamental and technical securities analysis? How well do mutual funds generally perform relative to the overall market? 5. What is capital-market efficiency? What are its implications for investment performance in general? What are the implications for fund managers, if the market exhibits characteristics of strong, semi-strong, or weak efficiency? 6. As of 2005, would you recommend investing in Miller’s Value Trust? What beliefs about the equity markets does your answer reflect?

The Report On Ecommerce In Tesco Plc Marketing Essay

The Report On Ecommerce In Tesco Plc Marketing Essay The present business environment is characterized by rising cut throat competition amongst competitors, ever increasing consumer demands, technological advancements, regulatory changes etc (Hill Jones, 2007). In such a situation, it becomes critically important for an organization to look for tools and modes of businesses which help them sustain their position and protect their competitive edge while reducing the costs of operations and enhancing profitability. Ecommerce is one such tool which helps organizations to undergo such. Ecommerce has brought revolutions in the mode of operations of organizations, and this has attributed 21st century in being known for its electronic economy (Coundouris, 2012). For the purpose of this assignment, Tesco has been chosen whose present ecommerce activities, and its implication will be looked into. Task 1 About Tesco Plc Tesco Plc is one of the largest global retailers of general merchandise and grocery. The British company, has the present rank of being the 3rd biggest global retailer as per the revenues generated (Reuters, 2011). It has presence, in more than 14 countries and is the market leader in groceries in its home country, United Kingdom, Thailand, Malaysia and Republic of Ireland (Finch, 2010). Tesco plc has present employee strength of more than 5, 00,000 in its global operations dedicated to providing the best choice, value as high quality service to the millions of customers base (Tesco Plc, 2013). 1.1. Business Functions of Tesco Tesco is a leading global retailer having its headquarters in United Kingdom. In order for it to maintain its business efficiency and productivity, it needs its main business functions to operate in an effective fashion. The main business functions of Tesco are Finance, Procurement Purchase, Human Resources, Sales Marketing, Information Technology and Supply Chain Management, business services consultancy etc. Along with this, another critical function of Tesco is the research and development function. 1.2. Tescos aim its relation to stakeholders Tescos main business aim is based on seven strategic pillars (Tesco Plc, 2013). These are as follows; Growth in the United Kingdom markets Being an outstanding retailer both online and real world Achieve a stronghold in the food items Experience a vast growth of the entire range of retail services in their different markets Putting responsibilities in the communities which are served by them and undertaking initiatives for the welfare and overall benefits Creator of a large number of high value brands Aiming to build a manpower team which shall help in creating more value for the organization and its services. Tesco places immense importance on maintaining and improving the stakeholder relations. They value their stakeholders and undertake initiatives to help and strengthen their relationships with them. The following are the lead stakeholders of Tesco Plc; Customers: Tesco places significance on the feedback provided by the customers in developing new products and services to help them serve more efficiently. The program of customer question times is critical, as through this the staff can take the ideas and opinions of the customers. Employees: Tesco is a pro-employee company, and believes that the only way it can sustain its competitive edge over others is by valuing their employees. Tesco management encourages feedback from the staff employees through different programs namely, the Staff Question Time, Viewpoint Staff Surveys, Processes of Staff Forum etc. Suppliers: Supplier relationships are an aspect which is critical for the success of Tesco, and the latter takes an active role in developing the suppliers for meeting their quality criteria and standardizations. Investors/Shareholders: Tesco has in place an efficient Investor Relations team which, maintains the investor relations. Society at large: The society in which Tesco operates is also impacted by the organizations operations, thereby serving as a key stakeholder of the retailer. Non Governmental Organizations: Tesco on a consistent basis meets with the different nongovernmental organizations in order to understand as well as respond to the different areas of concerns. Task 2 Impact of e-commerce 2.1. Impact of E-commerce on Tesco As per market experts, ecommerce is a tool which has revolutionized the relationship of the business and the consumer. As per the opinion of Terry Leary in 2001, the then Chief Executive of Tesco, the company has been able to develop the most efficient and best online system of grocery system in the globe. Tesco has been one of the first organizations to have understood the power of internet and incorporated such in their regular business functions since 1994. It established its online grocery shopping website for the first time in 1996. Finally, in 2000, the online website of Tesco was formally launched. Tesco in the present date has indeed emerged as the largest e-grocer globally (Tesco Plc, 2013). Tesco has played a critical role in changing the habits of purchase of the consumers. No longer, does the consumer feel the need to physically be present at the supermarkets and grocery stores in order to purchase their daily requirements. Presently Tescos website has wide product offeri ngs in categories of fresh food and groceries, clothing items, food, wines, gadgets etc. Tesco, as per recent announcements intend to invest more on the ecommerce aspect in developing a full 3D immersive web store which will take e-shopping into the next level and can be possible due to the rising broadband speeds of the UK users and the popularity of smart TVs (Chapman, 2012). 2.1.1. Risks of ecommerce in Tesco Tescos ecommerce activities have been recently criticized by market experts, namely, Troy Hunt, a Most Valuable Professional of Microsoft. As per him, Tesco overlooks certain basic security measures namely, password storage and protection, unselective encryption, a mixed aspect of the browser warnings as well as content, insecurities originated through different HTTP cookies, mis- configuration of security which act as significant risks for the ecommerce activities of Tesco (Hunt, 2012). 2.2. Global Impact of Ecommerce on society Ecommerce has a thorough impact on the global economy and society. As ecommerce enables people to shop from the comfort of their homes or offices, and ensure access to a wide range of products irrespective of the geographical boundaries, it has gained more competitive momentum and consists of very low barriers of entrance. This has in fact motivated a large number of businesses to adapt ecommerce in their normal modes of operations. Ecommerce has been a part of the large process of social change, constituting the globalization of the economies, transformation towards information and knowledge, increased prominence of different forms of technology etc. Electronic commerce is helping in shaping the entire society as a whole and hence, societal factors have a direct influence on the growth of such phenomenon. There are two societal enabling factors which fuel the growth of ecommerce. These are digital economy and trust confidence (Gibbs, Kraemer, Dedrick, 2003). However, the impact of ecommerce on societies can be explained in the following points; Ecommerce has totally revolutionized the mode of purchasing by consumers. This has resulted in the massive savings of time, which these individuals can now contribute in generating more value. It has significantly helped in strengthening of the social infrastructure by bringing on improvements in health, education, human resource developments, and training and in the overall sense of the communities. The specific technologies which are associated with ecommerce namely, in the automated payment systems, smart cards, e-information etc, play a critical role in the nurturing, delivery and strengthening of these services. Ecommerce has impacted the overall society by bringing in differences in some generalized social effects. Firstly time is an example of such. Ecommerce helps in efficient time management and has brought about a wide change in the concepts of time. Shorter product life cycles, round the clock operations and delivery of products and services are concepts with evolved with the evolution of ecommerce (Lewis Cockrill, 2002). As per studies conducted it has been observed, with the spread of ecommerce, individuals and families using such intend to have a higher than the average household income etc. As ecommerce was initially established more in United States, their native language is more prevalent in the electronic commerce. English and specifically American English has been the predominant language of such internet technology. Ecommerce has achieved a more or less equal familiarity with both its female users and male users. Hence, gender division has become less of a specific issue. As per surveys conducted of different websites, it has been observed that though women are the primary users of websites on shopping, retail, men have been the dominant users of car sites, gadgets etc (Marsden, 2000). Task 3 Designing ecommerce solutions 3.1. Market potential of an ecommerce opportunity in Tesco Tesco presently has more than 6234 stores in over 13 countries of operations and enjoys vast global customer base. It was one of the very first retailers to have started the ecommerce interactive website, and what was once solely used by a small consumer base of 450 has now thrived to become a booming business of ecommerce. Tesco already has in placed a large number of ecommerce activities, which have vast market potential. However, the company is now working on innovative technologies to make the shopping experience of customers from home a more enriching and realistic experience. Tesco is intending to launch a 3 dimensional ecommerce experience to help their consumers derive more value from their online presence. They are focusing on creation of a 3D store, which are now possible due to the prevalence of high speed broadband and a strong web browser (Chapman, 2012). Users can enter such 3D stores through the interface of smart televisions, and can select their products of choice from virtual racks of products as are placed in the brick and mortar stores. This initiative of Tesco takes ecommerce to the next level, and hence such has immense market potential. However, a critical necessity for consumers in order to take active part in such 3-D e-shopping is that, they must have in place smart televisions. This though is prevalent in first world nations, is gradually being adopted by the developing countries. 3.2. Present ecommerce systems used by Tesco Tesco Plc uses a specific interactive model named as the Market Portal Model for all its ecommerce activities. This model helps in integrating the supplier as well as the buyer sides and further ads relevant features and functions which help both the stakeholder groups in conducting business in an efficient fashion. This specific model is also being used by leading retailers namely, Walmart and has high utility in inventory distribution as well as management. This specific model is a transactional model, where it enables the buyers to purchase goods from the Tesco website, the information of which reaches the suppliers as well as Tesco. Suppliers have access to restricted information about such purchase and undertake actions regarding delivery and distribution. Tesco has invested in a heavy fashion in undertaking ecommerce activities, presently offering a specific mobile application along with an overall website for the customers of United Kingdom, the service of which is spread across the 70 + stores situated across Britain. This enables the nationals to purchase from Tesco from their mobile phones, iPad, laptops to collect groceries and other items. Tesco has been intending to expand their online store and purchasing facilities of fresh groceries and food items to other nations where they have based their operations in. Namely, in 2010, the leading retailer had planned to expand in Prague, Poland by October 2012 with further expansion to leading emerging markets of China, India, and Malaysia in the future. It is till date is in tandem with its targets. Instead of building specific and separate platforms of ecommerce for different nations, the British retailer built a common overall template which could be successfully utilized in the different international websites (Cotterill, 2012). The in-house team of Tesco present in India and United Kingdom built such a platform which is designated to work across the borders. Building such a common platform has been associated with a large number of challenges which were managed efficiently by the in house team of professionals of Tesco. 3.3. Financial implications of ecommerce solutions in Tesco Tesco has been identified as the most popular online shopping website amongst the UK buyers as according to a number of surveys (Charlton, 2011). As per the statistics obtained from comScore, Tesco occupied 66% of the total online shopping market in 2006 itself. The retailer accounted for  £ 1 of every  £ 8 spent on the high streets of UK, has been named by a number of market research companies as being the biggest online grocery services (Best, 2006). As per recent surveys, UK consumers spent around 6.4 billion pounds during October, 2012 which was a record rise since the statistics of last year. Also, as per the survey conducted by IMRG and Capgemini, online spending would further increase greatly in the future with Tesco occupying the largest chunk of such (Deatsch, 2012). Alongside, mobile sales have also increased which is leveraged by the mobile app designed by Tesco. The financial implications of such are in higher profitability, and revenue generation for the leading reta iler. 3.4. Design an ecommerce solution With customers becoming more technologically savvy and having high expectations from online retailers Tesco needs to be updated about the future trends of ecommerce and need to adopt such in order to launch innovative offerings to the customers. Tesco has been undertaking heavy investments to focus on ecommerce solutions, the most recent of such being the one billion pound investment strategy of developing the online websites through the Marketplace, which will enable the consumers to purchase other third party products from the website of Tesco. Tesco can undertake options through which, consumers while purchasing items from Tesco, can also aim to sell them to prospective buyers through the website. This will help in generating more interactions between the retailer and the consumers and will popularize it further. Further, Tesco can incorporate click and collect options of online purchases, where consumers can purchase products online, and collect such on their own time from a large number of collection points spread across the nation. Tesco can incorporate these points and design new solutions of ecommerce which will help in enhancing the customer satisfaction further. 3.5. Suitability of an ecommerce application Consumers increasingly provide importance in fast delivery of the products purchased through ecommerce channels. However, this does not signify that they are willing to pay extra shipping costs for such fast deliveries. Rather, it has been observed that, the concept of purchasing goods online, and collecting such by themselves is gaining importance. This is known as the Click and Collect concept. Tesco has already launched click and collect system, and is aiming to establish a large number of collection centers around Britain (Hall, 2012). As the customer feedback to such a system has been immensely positive, hence it can be safely concluded that such an ecommerce application would be suitable in the future. Findings The following are the core findings of this report; Ecommerce is a specific industry where selling and buying of goods and services are conducted through different computer systems and internet. Ecommerce in present times, works on different technologies of mobile commerce, internet marketing, electronic funds transfer and data exchange etc. Tesco, the largest retailer in United Kingdom places immense importance on ecommerce and has the very first retailer to have successfully launched the online website amongst its counterparts. Ecommerce has successfully revolutionized the mode of conducting business and simultaneously has impacted the society in bringing positive change in education, health, communication, other social factors etc. Tesco utilizes the Market Portal Model of ecommerce in its operations and has in place a very effective online shopping website specifically for the UK customers. In 2010, Tesco had targeted to expand its online grocery shopping options in other regions namely, Prague and Poland by 2012 and further into other emerging nations of India and China in future Tesco has invested to build a uniform platform of ecommerce, which will be applicable to different nations instead of building separate country specific channel. Further, Tesco, is focusing on building a 3D market place, through which buyers can have a look at the virtual market place through internet and smart televisions from the comfort of their homes while making purchases. Recommendations In order for Tesco to be successful in their endeavors, the following recommendations should be followed by them; Tesco should give initiative in understanding the different multichannel aspects of ecommerce and in identifying and strengthening the various checkpoints of such multiple channels (Dougall, 2012) Next Tesco should place more importance on the power of the mobile commerce, and build dedicated strategies to manage such effectively The concept of click and collect must be explored and more collection points must be established Aspects of real time bidding should also be looked into Conclusion Ecommerce has gained widespread importance in todays business world and is expected to gain a higher momentum in the future. Tesco Plc, the organization chosen for this report has been placing immense importance on such ecommerce activities, and has in store relevant strategic objectives which will help in enhancing the performance and the profitability of the company. This report would be of significant help to students of business management as they would obtain a comprehensive picture of ecommerce and its implications on a leading organization of today. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã†â€™

Linear Feedback Shift Registers Essay -- Computers, Cryptography

Abstract: Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSRs) are considered powerful methods for generating pseudo-random bits in cryptography algorithm applications. In this paper it is shown that the linear dependencies in the generated random bit sequences can be controlled by adding a chaotic logistic map to the LFSR’s systems. The structure of the LFSR’s output sequence in combination with a chaotic map is analyzed and proved to have at least as much uniformity than the corresponding set for the linear components individually. In order to understand that using the proposed PRBG is reliable in secure algorithms, the NIST suite test have been taken on the proposed method, finally to compare the proposed PRNG output sequence features with the two types of LFSRs (Fibonacci and Galois). Keywords: Linear Feedback Shift Register, Random Number, Chaotic Map, NIST. 1. Introduction In the modern world of computers, network security is the main concern which relies on the use of cryptography algorithms. high quality random number generation is a basic subject of cryptography algorithms and the importance of a secure random number generator design cannot be underestimated. Most common generation techniques about RNGs involve truly random and pseudorandom number generators. For a brief introduction in various types of RNGs: Truly Random Number Generators (RNGs) is a computer algorithm, which generates a sequence of statistically independent random numbers. Actually these generators require a naturally occurring source of randomness phenomena (i.e. as a non-deterministic system). Most practical implementations design a hardware device or a software program based on RNGs to produce a bit sequence which is statistically independent. Pseud... ...3245, 0.9966745]; so the p-values of our purposed method is in this interval and then the 15 tests of the NIST suite have been passed as shown In Fig. 6. Fig. 6. NIST test result (Red is the Proposed PRNG, Blue represents Galois and Green is Fibonacci) 6. Conclusion In this paper we presented a novel method to generate random bit sequence by combination of LFSR’s system and chaotic logistic map and it has been proved in a reliable theorem. At the end, we compared it with the same other methods such as Fibonacci LFSR and Galois LFSR, and the result was shown in table 1. Confucius in Modern China Essay -- philosophical ideologies

Every culture is composed of many philosophical ideologies that comprise the ever-changing nature of said nation. Many cultures do not have a monolithic, nor static nature; ideas such as Maoism, Daoism, Christianity, etc., challenge the preexisting notions that are part of a culture. Even though the Chinese government has established a strong strand against Confucianism, it is still a part of the Chinese culture in socio-political, economic, familial, and individual levels. Confucianism is still prevalent though business, education, the Confucian revival, the previous ties China had with Confucianism, and a return to old traditions as a default. Through the economic-business aspect point of view, Confucianism still holds sway over many of the actions and feelings in Chinese business, and some even say that, â€Å"it is impossible to do business in China and not feel the effects of Confucian philosophy† (Jacobs 29). For example, the sense of a social hierarchy is painfully obvious when foreign entrepreneurs do business with Chinese companies. In a business venture, â€Å"a British marketer who invited several Chinese guests to a trade promotion reception†¦ According to Chinese tradition, the glass of wine should have been presented to the highest trade official first† (Jacobs 29). This sense of hierarchy is also integrated into several manifestations of Chinese business management, particularly in an individual level that builds up to the corporation as a whole; due to the fact that the majority of people are expected to behave according to rank, they are disinclined to present ideas that may lead to the de velopment of the business. Jacobs also says that this explains â€Å"much of the inertia in Chinese businesses, particularly in state-owned en... ...ts influence is still strong. For example, â€Å"the Chinese state is allocating a $10 billion fund to sponsor a worldwide network of schools to promote Chinese culture and language† in the Chinese Bridge Program, which is viewed as he first step to a wider global acceptance of Confucian philosophy (Zhu). Speaking in a historical sense, in times of major social change, such as when the Communist party came into political power, Confucianism was derided and dismissed. Although political agendas and events try to mask the traditional ideologies of the Chinese people, recent political changes have said to create a new structure (Jacobs 30). Just as any other philosophy that has been imbued with a culture, Confucianism is not easy thing to dissolve; the basic principals form the basis of much of China†²s culture on a business, familial, socio-political, and individual levels.

Free YGB Essay - Formalistic Approach to Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown :: Free Essays on Young Goodman Brown

Young Goodman Brown:   The Formalistic Approach In reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown, I found many of the formalistic approach concepts in this short story. The concepts in this short story were simple to see and to understand. There was much discussion about the symbolism, allegory, and allusion, along with the ambiguity, and form.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The formalistic approach to reading is one of the most common approaches to reading literature. The formalistic approach has three main points to it: symbolism, allegory, and allusion. However these are not the only criteria that belong to the formalistic approach. Ambiguity, form, and organic form are also a part of it. Symbolism can refer to an image. "When an image takes on meaning beyond its objective self, it moves into the realm of symbolism (86)". Allegory is "a one to one equivalence between the surface meaning and a higher meaning(101)". An example of this is a man named Christian that is christian. Allusion is a reference to something else, maybe another piece of literature or another movie. Allusion can lead to the reader's knowledge of the rest of the story. Ambiguity is the use of a particular word, but yet the word itself has many different meanings. Form is the way the reader identifies a story whether it is a story or a poe m. The organic form has two parts: the local texture and logical structure. The local texture is the specific metaphors while the logical structure is the basic idea or argument of the story. In Young Goodman Brown, symbolism is displayed in many areas. The first obvious one is the use of the word faith. Young Goodman Brown has a wife named Faith and in the later part of the story he actually loses his faith. The pink ribbon can also be used as a symbol. This is also a demonstration of ambiguity. Red often refers to sex while white refers to purity. However since pink is a mixture between red and white this leads us to think that there can be suspicion in this story. Other symbols from this book are the names of the people. In our class discussion we talked about the Puritans and the way they named their children. They name their children after things that are very important to them such as faith, purity, and chasity. Throughout this book there are many names used such as Faith and Goodman Brown.

Factors that affect the communication process Essay

There are various factors that affect the communication process. Among many of the factors some are very important and play a very important role throughout society, cultural, ethical and individual ways of perspective and communication. Throughout life people have and/or will be faced with the challenge of playing out these roles in society. For example, there are different cultures around the world. In some culture women are to be covered up at all times and are married off to as trade for cattle or money to their father. Where in cultures women are free to dress and marry by there choice. These two women will experience culture shock while communicating with each other. Culture is the values, attitudes and morals, someone is thought that carry over into their social lives. By taken the time to make sure we as people can cultural communication it can keep down most of the confusing in workplace, school and just maybe the world. Ethnical identify also is an important factor that affects the communication process, because of what is taught cultural and/or in people homes. The ethnicity plays in how two co-workers from different and same cultures interact with one another. For example, in the United States of America during slavery most White Americans where taught and believed they were superior when communicating with African-Americans so the communication was only a one direction channel. When African-American communication between each other back then where thru songs and marking. Ethnical identify is a very touchy subject all over the world and causes  racial profiling among all Ethnical groups. The most important factor that these minority races consider are their backgrounds. Ethnical issues can arise due to terminations, promotions, and bonuses. The individual identity is also an important factor that impacts communication. An individual communicates with others depended upon their own social imagination. This can play a role in which supervisor is admired in the workplace and willing to work with you, or who is most resented. Once others realize this they accept it, and find ways to work around with but  remove themselves from the person outside of a work environment. This includes someone’s own personality traits and how they esteem themselves. Finally the last factor to be discussed is societal identity. This references the roles others play in society. Some people may object to others actions, because they have different backgrounds. In the workplace younger works are said to be better at handle the rapid pace of how things change with technology in the workplace than older worker. This is not a true statement; however this is the depiction of society. The roles people paly such as a supervisor. It allows us to present ourselves a certain way towards our supervisors. I for one have taught and seen older coworkers take the time to learn and catch up with the pace of the change in the workplace.

Sir, Gawain’s Traits

Gawain’s rise to the game. Arthurian legends are medieval romances that tell wondrous tales of fantasy and chivalry. The chivalric code of knights was highly revered as a way of life. This code of bravery honor and loyalty was followed by every knight and royal in the medieval ages. Sir Gawain and the Green knight is a medieval romance that demonstrates Sir Gawain’s demonstrations and lack there of chivalry through his bravery, loyalty and honor. However he follows the code of chivalry more so than breaking it.One of Gawain’s traits that made him a model of chivalry is his bravery in the face of danger. Gawain was ready to take the challenge of the green knight and save his king from it as soon as he could. â€Å"Command me to step down from the dais and take this game. †(ML 123-124) King Arthur was the only knight to step up to the challenge, and seeing this wanting to protect him Sir Gawain decides to take the game from him. â€Å"’only you as my uncle have I any honor. † (ML138) In this situation, Gawain is also being loyal to his king and uncle by saving his life in taking the game. Gawain shows both modesty and hid courtesy towards his queen all just moments from he shows his bravery. â€Å"‘That I might without bad manners move down from my place (though I couldn’t if my liege lady disliked it)’ â€Å"(ML 128-129). Gawain is saying that he will listen to whatever his queen says to do, regardless of the situation he is in. Before he takes the challenge of the knight Gawain states â€Å"’My life would be the least missed if. † (Ml 137) Gawain, while sounding somewhat critical of himself, is actually demonstrating his great sense of modesty during the story Honor is a trait that is not found very much in this day and age. In the end, the lord of the castle discovers that not even Gawain was honorable to him. â€Å"You have failed me in our exchange, so I’ve trapped you here , that sash you wear by your scabbard belongs to me’† (ML348-350). Another trait that is highly regarded in this day and age is faith. There is faith in religion, faith in yourself, or even faith in objects.Gawain puts faith in a magical green sash that is enchanted and would save his life. (67) In conclusion, Gawain follows the code of chivalry and makes a worthy knight of the round table. Granted that some of the traits of chivalry are not his strong suit, Gawain still follows true to the almighty code that all of the knights follow. Any mistake that Sir Gawain made during this he was either forgiven for, or they went unnoticed, given that this is straying from the code, in the end Gawain is still the most worthy knight of the round table.

Policing has affected a Nation not Just a Race Essay

Throughout the interview process I was able to understand and gain an adequate perception of how others felt about law enforcement here in the United States. I found that many answers were universal and were not only the views of one particular race. Law enforcement is set in place to up hold the laws and to protect and serve the people of the United States. However, I found that a few of my interviewees felt that law enforcement was biased and were not for all people. The interviewing process was very interesting and being able to listen to the participants’ responses was very enlightening. No two people had the same perception however, there were many concerns that were similar. My first interview was conducted on an African American woman. She is 75 years old and is originally from Saint Joseph, Louisiana. However, she is a widower and all of her children have passed on. She moved here to Houston Texas in 1960 with the husband and two children. Where they have resided in th e area of Houston known as Fifth Ward for over 54 years. She has spoken about how growing up in Louisiana as a black child was horrible, and how they were taught to avoid the police by all means. The town of Saint Joseph was a very small town, and it was divided by color. Yes my interviewee grew up during segregation, and she recalls that the police were not for the blacks. She recalls classmates being beaten by the police and nothing never being done about the fact that they were beaten for nothing. She spoke of the time when her sister worked for a white family and was raped by the man of the house. Her sister and family could not report such a crime because they feared that it would bring trouble to their entire family. She states that she has no respect for law enforcement, however she states that she never breaks the laws of the land. Obeying the law is her way of staying out of jail and feels as long as she abides the law she is quite alright. During her interview I found her having many stories to tell in regards to how black life has no value, and how she has never seen the law truly work for the African American. Her responses to the  questions left her stumbled sometime, and I found myself finding ways to inform her that law enforcement ha s made great changes since she was a child. I could understand but I was unable to relate because my experience with law enforcement has never been to the extent of hers. I did find it quite interesting when she was asked the question about domestic violence. Her response was, â€Å"I never heard of husband’s hitting their wives and if they did that was not something for the world to know†. She stated that, â€Å"You knew that what went on in your home stayed in your home†. I was shocked and somewhat appalled at her response. Her body language and her tone let me know that she was indeed serious about keeping affairs in the home. She believed that women who were hit must have done something pretty bad to make her husband hit her. I still found myself puzzled by her response. Although during the second interview when asked this very same question. She elaborated about an incident with her cousin who was caught cheating and her husband did abuse her. She inclined to say that, â€Å"You just do not do things in such a manner and not expect such behaviors†. I could understand where she was coming from, but I was not able to agree with a man or a woman hitting their mate. This 76 year old black women was still stuck in the era of when she was a child and very young adult. She felt that law enforcement would never been positioned to serve or protect African Americans, and that the only reason they have allowed blacks to become police officers was because it would not matter if another black man was killed. In her opinion there is no hope for the African American people here in the United States and that it is just a bunch of boloney in the world in which we live. However she did feel that the use of DNA was the greatest thing that could have come along. With a strong understanding that the use of DNA can help to solve crimes and maybe even help from crimes being committed. She believes that if they find a killer this way people may think twice before actually think twice before committing murder. Her wish is that law enforcement stop perceiving and believing that all black people are  criminals. My next interviewee is a Caucasian women and she is 41 years old. She is married and is the mother of three children. She is a fulltime student at the University of Houston-Downtown and she will be graduating in December. She is a Houston native and she grew up near Bellaire. Her and her family now reside in the historical area of the Heights. This too was a very interesting interview, simply because she was truly involved with the questions and she gave a statement as to why she felt the way she did with the answers she gave. Her answer in regards to domestic violence she felt that there are three sides to a story and that both parties should give their side. Then allow the police to determine if the call and the situation requires law enforcement to detain anyone. Her thoughts on how the police perceived citizens was very mind blowing, and she felt that it was not just minorities that were targeted by law enforcement. However she does feel that police are power hungry, bias, hardworking and underpaid, and this only adds stress. Stress can factor in how law enforcement responds and reacts to certain situations when performing their job without allowing race and location to blind their actually duty to the citizens. As stated early she feels that every citizens is scrutinized by law enforcement, and she feels that law enforcement tends to the jump the gun before completely assessing the situation. Being a mother of three she found what it felt like when her son was stopped and harassed by the police for no particular reason. She believes these acts are the very reason that the younger generation shows no respect for law enforcement. However she does feel that reaching out to high schools would be a proactive in the process of recruiting new offi cers. She also feels that there she be additional training included for those citizens with mental illness. Those trainings will help to keep the citizens and the officers out of harm’s way. I will now move on to my third participant who is a 46 year old African American woman who has recently divorced and has no children. She is originally from East Oakland, California and has been in Houston for 5 years. Returning back home is the plan in the five years. She has dealt with the police on a regular occasions due to her ex-husband being  incarcerated for ten years. Her answers were just as interesting as my second participant, and her answers were very colorful. I want to just note that her lifestyle was one that was accustomed to glitz and glam due to the fact that her ex-husband was a drug dealer. She recalls the time that law enforcement ran into her home and threw her on the floor and she stated talked to her like she was an actual dog. Not allowing her to speak, handcuffed her, and she was thrown in the back of a police car. She says that she was held for questioning for 2 days, and even with her ex-husband stating that she had nothing to do with his dealings. They keep her and continued to question her asking the same questions over and over. However she does not hate law enforcement and she believes that this very incident opened her eyes to a different type of guy she would ha ve. She feels that most part traditional policing strategies have been effective in combating crime, however police use excessive force when utilizing discretion in dealing with citizens sometimes. Recalling an incident that was made into a movie named â€Å"Fruitvale† was based on a true story and was right down the street from which she grew up. She believes that the police in East Oakland are very aggressive and are trigger happy. She feels that law enforcement here in Houston are not as aggressive with law enforcement back home in California. She does feel that in certain areas of town here in Houston. This participant would like to see a substantial increase of specialized training in the mental illness area, sign language for the hearing impaired and subtle prejudice courses for those law enforcement officers who are hiding behind their badge. Police officers are receiving adequate training as for as the physical requirements. To be well rounded you have to have some since of street smarts and able to deal with people from all walks of life. She agrees with every current method of police recruitment, selection, and training of officers, except the minimum age requirement for some law enforcement agencies. She had some personal views on domestic violence seeing that she was a domestic violence survivor. She does believe that women should be arrested for domestic violence, however she feels there is an exception if the woman is trying to defend herself. My fourth participant is 43 year old African American male and he is married with no kids. Had no run in with the law until he mad e 40 years old. His brushes with law came from driving while intoxicated and carrying a handgun. He was  able to have the handgun case dismissed, because he actually had his handgun concealed. However he is on probation for driving while intoxicated. He has lived in Houston his entire life and has very biased views about law enforcement. In his younger days he was a part of a gang and was what he refers to as a thug and drug dealer. He took pride in his past and stated that had he not have met his wife he would probably still be running the streets. I also found that he is a male chauvinist and has some harsh views on domestic violence. When asked about domestic violence he stated that a women should know her place and that the man is head of his home. He feels that as long as a woman is submissive and keeps her husband happy they should not have any problems. He does not feel that a wife should not call the police on her husband and that they should keep what goes on in their home. Being a woman that has experienced domestic violence I got off of subject and asked him why such harsh feelings about domestic violence. He stated that his step father was abusive and his mother stayed. She never called the police on him and over time the abuse stopped. They were pretty happy before his step father passed, and being the grandson of a pastor he feels that bible is key to keeping a happy home. When asked about how the police perceived citizens, he automatically stated that African Americans have no chance with the Houston police department. Growing up in the northeast intercity area of Houston he says he has seen police brutality on a regular. The police were not there to help black people is what he stated. He said the only way the police were on your side was if you had enough money to pay them. They do not fight crime and they are a part of the crimes that are committed. Biased and unethical are his choice words about law enforcement. Still today in 2013 ones race and ethnicity affects how police treat you. Blacks are treated as the criminal and Whites are treated as the innocent bystanders. He feels that police are a threat to minorities and there should be training to new officers so that they do not allow their personal views to interfere with their ability to protect and serve all citizens. He express the fact that the police have no understanding or training when it comes to dealing with the mentally ill, and feels they have no problem with shooting them. Extensive training should be given yearly, and maybe even some classes should be required to be able to realize that there may be some mental illness when dealing with certain individuals. I  want to be honest and inform you that I was not able to complete a second interview with this participant and I was able to find a fifth participant. Now my last participant is 35 year old African American women who is married with three children and is a fulltime student at the University of Houston. She is a Psychology major and will be graduating in May of 2014. She is native Houstonian and grew up in the fifth ward area. Having a daughter in the military has opened her eyes for all those that protect and serve. She is also the daughter of a preacher. She believes that females have more help now to escape an abusive home in a peaceful and confidential manner. However she feels in some cases determining the difference between minor and serious acts of domestic violence are ignored by officers that arrive on the scene. Understanding the frustration when officers deal with mentally ill people because many officers have died trying to help but in many cases officers are there to get them the help they need so yes they do respond appropriately. DNA is vital in most convictions because it can be used to clear suspects and exonerate persons mistakenly accused or convicted of crimes. She believes that laws are put in place to protect not only the citizens but those that are uniformed to do so. When asked about the current methods of recruiting she respond. The current method for recruiting officers is pretty good but as in any field how can you really predict or screen if you have a ‘bad’ or â€Å"good† officer as a candidate despite all the requirements including background and psychological information revealed. She felt that the only inadequate problem of training is the mental state of many of the officers. In the area of training she believes that all officers need to be trained on how to deal with other races and they need to be taught social skills within various cultures. Maybe this will help them erase preconceived notions and ideas of others that are not a part of their ethnic group. There are way too many cases involving officers and issues with minorities, stereotyping, racial profiling, brutality, injustice and racism, many officer perceptions is very negative when it comes to certain ethnicities. There has to be a stamp on the bias that affects the way minorities are treated when dealing with law enforcement. All of the participants were very strong about their views based on personal or others experiences with law enforcement. Listening to their answers and their stories opened my eyes, and allowed me to feel how they truly felt. However  I wondered did any of my participants understand that many officers may have the same opinion about the citizens that they protect and serve. Many men and women that are in law enforcement fear for their lives every day. I understand that some law enforcement officers are biased, however I feel that some of that may extend from personal experiences as well. Maybe there could be some common ground for both parties, and there should be a communal outreach to bring back community involvement.

Public Private Partnership in the Philippines Essay

Methodology The researcher used the historical research method that provided information on the value of Public-Private Partnership in Philippine Infrastructure Construction. The data provides an overview on how valuable, whether it be for the benefit or detriment of the country, PPP projects are in the socio-economic paradigm. The gathered data were from relevant books, research papers, government data, and thru papers released by relevant parties. What is Public–Private Partnership? Public–private partnership (PPP) describes a government service or private business venture which is funded and operated through a partnership of government and one or more private sector companies. These schemes are sometimes referred to as PPP, P3 or P3. 1 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public%E2%80%93private_partnership 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public%E2%80%93private_partnership One of the possible reasons why PPP is the format as to how the Philippine government is conducting most of its high budgeted infrastructure projects is clearly stated by Ferreira and Khatami â€Å"The private sector is playing an increasingly crucial role in the financing and provision of services that were traditionally the domain of the public sector. One of the key reasons is that governments are unable to cope with the ever-increasing demands on their budgets. Most infrastructure expenditures in developing countries have been funded directly from fiscal budgets but several factors such as macroeconomic instability and growing investment requirements have shown that public financing is volatile and, in many countries, rarely meet crucial infrastructure expenditure requirements in a timely and adequate manner.† PPP involves a contract between a public sector authority and a private party, in which the private party provides a public service or project and assumes substantial financial, technical and operational risk in the project. In some types of PPP, the cost of using the service is borne exclusively by the users of the service and not by the taxpayer. In other types (notably the private finance initiative), capital investment is made by the private sector on the strength of a contract with government to provide agreed services and the cost of providing the service is borne wholly or in part by the government. Government contributions to a PPP may also be in kind (notably the transfer of existing assets). In projects that are aimed at creating public goods like in the infrastructure sector, the government may provide a capital subsidy in the form of a one-time grant, so as to make it more attractive to the private investors. In some other cases, the government may support the project by providing revenue subsidies, including tax breaks or by providing guaranteed annual revenues for a fixed period. 2 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public%E2%80%93private_partnership 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public%E2%80%93private_partnership PPP in the Philippines The Philippines has a long history of public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives, which serve as a rich basis for future investments. As of now it is a priority of the Benigno Aquino III Administration probably due to its perceived socio economic benefits not only in the usual infrastructure projects like roads, expressways, bridges, transportation terminals etc., it is also going after sectors like information and communications, healthcare, etc. One of the forefront departments involved in Infrastructure development and PPPs is the Department of Public Works and Highways. As Infrastructures are means for our country to regain and sustain high economic growth, improve the social living standards of the people and remove the bottlenecks to international commerce and investment. Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is seen as â€Å"approach to invest resources for adequate road infrastructure. The Government has fewer resources to invest on Expressways. DPWH will undertake the reforms needed to create a more conducive environment for private business and help generate many more bankable projects.3† DPWH PROJECTS FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN 2011 1. NAIA Expressway (Phase II) 2. NLEx-SLEx Link Expressway (Unsolicited Proposal) 3. 3 Department of Public Works and Highways, PPP Projects 3 Department of Public Works and Highways, PPP Projects Daang Hari – SLEx Link | There were 10 PPPs announced for bidding in 2010, 4 were airport projects. The PPPs included: * the Cavite-Laguna Expressway project, * NAIA Expressway II, * LRT 2 East Extension project’ * Privatization of LRT-1 O&M, * Privatization of MRT-3 O&M, * LRT 1 Cavite Extension project, * Bohol Airport, * Puerto Princesa Airport, * New Legaspi (Daraga) airport, and * Privatization of O&M of Laguindingan airport. But some of these projects were shelved because the government wanted to be prudent about the structure and rules under which these would be bid out to private investors. Feasibility studies also took a lot of time. 4 4 Why the Initial 10 PPP’s were designed to fail by AYA LOWE 4 Why the Initial 10 PPP’s were designed to fail by AYA LOWE Rene Santiago, a transportation consultant said that opportunity losses due to delays in the PPPs are mounting. For the LRT-1 Cavite extension alone, he estimated the loss at P80 billion in the last 10 years. Santiago also estimated the losses for 2011 to 2013 to total P25 billion in economic costs. The value of the economic benefit loss of the LRT-2 east extension, which would not be completed until 2016, according to Santiago, is already P5.4 billion, more than half the cost of the project itself, which is P9 billion. According to Santiago, Manila was first among ASEAN countries to set up an urban railway — the LRT-1 built in the 1980s. â€Å"Many of ASEAN countries have now overtaken Manila,† he said, however.â€Å" From now until 2020, expect the Philippines to lag behind other countries in terms of railway projects,† he said. Based on the researched data Public Private partnership for infrastructures benefits are as follows: * It could increase and give greater infrastructure solutions due to private companies having more resources for research and development and use of innovative technology. * It will offer faster project completion and reduced delays because it skips most of the government red tape present in normal construction and funding is internal to the private sector so there are no projected delays due to budget release. * Its return of investment (ROI) is greater when compare to traditional methods, due to innovative design and financing approaches because of the experience of the private sector in marketing. * Risks are weighted from initial conceptual stages to determine the feasibility of a certain project * The operational and project execution risk is transferred totally to the private sector, leaving the public component on a win-win situation * It is a concept where early completion of the infrastructure is expected under expected budget, reducing the claims and change order process due to it being similar to a developers scenario. * It allows government funds to be re-directed to other important socio-economic areas because funding of projects are done by the private sector. * Reduces government budget and budget deficits, because the government is virtually getting an infrastructure for free. * Public Private partnership allows a reduce tax payment from users similar to the subsidies of the government in LRT, MRT. * Allows the government to direct the expected function of the project in accordance to their own interests But not everything is good about PPP, listed are some of the determined drawbacks: * PPPs have risks involved, and the government will the pay the price to transfer those risks to the private sector, risks like bankruptcy, possible failure of the project during operation. * Certain situations can affect the purity of the process due to specialized areas being improved, reducing the number of contractors available to perform the requested projects wherein sometimes monopoly of contracts happen. * Profits of the projects can vary depending on the assumed risk, competitive level, complexity and volume of the project being performed * Government representative must be highly specialized personnel and contracting experts mostly people from concerned agencies like DOT and DPWH have to have these kind highly trained personnel. CONCLUSION Based on the data gathered the proponent of the study has come to the following conclusion, the benefits of Public Private Partnership further outweighs its detriments as some of the drawbacks can be easily averted through proper project planning and control and preparation. For PPP to be successful, the government and the private sectors involved must do it in with careful urgency. The Philippines is a developing country as such progress and infrastructures needed to elevate our status would be beneficial if achieved in the shortest amount of time as possible, but these projects, if without ample considerations, may initially look promising but in the end may cause a lot of problems, and instead of helping become one of those elements that keep slowing the country down.
